CentOS Linux 6.10 is here with Retpoline-based mitigations for Specter V2

The CentOS development team has announced the CentOS 6.10 official availability, the latest update to the CentOS 6 series.

Based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.10, CentOS Linux 6.10 incorporates a new update to the GCC (GNU Compiler Collection) that isSupports retpolines to better protect users against the second variant of the popular Specter vulnerability that affects millions of computers with modern processors.

CentOS 6.10 also rethinks gcc libraries, clufter, and pacemaker packages in new releases, updates IP table services to read configuration files from /etc/sysctl.d folder, and updates BIND with a new root KSK for the next release of DNSSEC Root Zone Key-Signing-Key.

CentOS 6.10 is derived from the source code package released by Red Hat Inc. for Red Hat Enterprise 6.10. All variants have been combined into a single repository to make it easier for end users. Servers, workstations and minimal installations will act under a single repository. All of our testing is done in this combined repository ”mentions Rich Bowen from the CentOS team.

Obsolete packages and drivers in CentOS 6.10

Additionally, multiple hardware drivers are scrapped including 3w-9xxx, 3w-sas, 3w-xxxx, aic7xxx, i2o, ips, megaraid_mbox, mptbase, mptctl, mptfc, mptlan, mptsas, mptscsih, mptspi, qla3xxx and sym53c8xx that are no longer available for updates, as well as some controls for megaraid_sas and be2iscsi drivers.

On the other hand, CentOS 6.10 comes without the python-qmf, python-qpid, qpid-cpp, qpid-qmf, qpid-tests, qpid-tools, ruby-qpid and saslwrapper packages, TLS compression support is also removed from the package. NSS which avoids security risks.
