CentOS 8.5 has already been released and this is the latest version of the 8.x series giving way to CentOS Stream

Few days ago the release of the new version of Linux distribution "CentOS 2111", which incorporates the changes from Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.5.

Notably this is the latest version of the distribution in this delivery model (CentOS Classic) the distribution is fully binary compatible with RHEL 8.5.

Main news of Centos 2111

Plus the new features introduced in RHEL 8.5, the content of 34 packages has been changed in CentOS 2111, including anaconda, dhcp, firefox, grub2, httpd, kernel, PackageKit, and yum.

Changes made to packages are generally limited to rebranding and replacement of Red Hat Related Names (RHEL).

In total, RHEL-specific packages such as redhat- *, insights-client, and subscription-manager-migration * were removed. As in RHEL 8.5 for CentOS 8.5, additional AppStream modules are built with new versions of OpenJDK 17, Ruby 3.0, nginx 1.20, Node.js 16, PHP 7.4.19, GCC Toolset 11, LLVM Toolset 12.0.1, Rust Toolset 1.54. 0 and the Ir 1.16.7 toolset.

We are pleased to announce the general availability of the latest CentOS Linux version 8. Effective immediately, this is the
current version for CentOS Linux 8 and is labeled 2111, derived of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.5 source code.

** PLEASE NOTE: ** CentOS Linux 8 will end on December 31, 2021.

Remember, it is not advisable to use CentOS Linux 8 in production or you should have a plan to migrate to a different operating system before December 31, 2021. We will only update as detailed above.

As we mentioned at the beginning, this is the latest version of the 8.x branch, which will be superseded by the continuously updated edition of the distribution CentOS Stream by the end of the year. The release of updates for CentOS Linux 8 will be discontinued on December 31. On or before January 31, in case of critical vulnerabilities, content related to the CentOS Linux 8 branch will be removed from the mirrors and moved to the vault.centos.org archive.

As with all CentOS Linux 8 components, this release was built from
sources hosted at git.centos.org. The sources will be available at vault.centos.org in their own dedicated directories to match the Corresponding binary RPMs.

Since there is much less traffic towards CentOS source RPMs compared to the binary RPMs, we are not going to put this content in the main mirror network. If users want to mirror this content, they can do so using the
reposync command available in the yum / dnf-utils package.
The source RPMs are signed with the same key that is used to sign their binary counterpart. Developers and end users looking to inspect and contribute patches to the CentOS Linux distribution you will find the code hosted on git.centos.org much simpler to work with.

Finally, users are advised to migrate to CentOS Stream installing the centos-release-stream package. This can be done from a terminal by typing the following command:

dnf install centos-release-stream

And after that run the command:

dnf install

Alternatively, for those users who do not agree to use CentOS Stream, we must remember that various alternatives are available that we have shared here on the blog, from which they can migrate to distributions that continue with the development of the CentOS 8 branch, such as : SoulLinux (with your migration script), Rocky linux (with your migration script), VzLinux (with your migration script) u Oracle Linux (with your migration script).

Also, Red Hat has provided an option (script for migration) free to use RHEL in open source organizations and individual developer environments up to 16 virtual or physical systems.

Finally, if you are interested in being able to know more about it, you can consult the details in the following link.

For those who are interested in being able to obtain the system image of this new released version, they should know that the CentOS 2111 builds are prepared on 8GB DVD images and 600MB netboot for x86_64, Aarch64 (ARM64) and ppc64le architectures. The SRPMS packages on which the binaries and debugging information are based are available through vault.centos.org.

Unbelievable how quickly it happened from IBM buying Redhat to Centos death. It gives to consider many things in the Gnu-Linux community [at the end of the day the financing that Redhat contributed among other things ended up killing Centos]
