Canonical prepares to update Ubuntu source, available from Lunar Lobster

Ubuntu source

It is likely that some of our readers have noticed that the font I use in most of the images that I add to my posts is the official Ubuntu font. It's partly because it's related to Linux, and partly because the ones from other projects, like Debian, aren't open source and can't be used freely. If what Canonical is planning ends up coming true, Ubuntu will have a new font starting this April, and the font I'm using will be slightly different.

So we can read it in the Discourse of Ubuntu, where they give instructions on how to install the new source to test it. The intention is that it be the official letter of Ubuntu from Lunar Lobster, scheduled for April 2023. Looking at the new version (the one in the screenshot is the current one, not the future one), if I have to be honest I don't notice any difference, and without more information, such as a description of what they have tweaked on the Ubuntu forum, it is difficult to distinguish between the current and future source.

Ubuntu 23.04 is coming April 20

Our design team has been working on an updated version of the Ubuntu source. It has been pushed to the Lunar archive before UIF but locked in the proposed pocket because we feel we need more testing and feedback before deciding to include it for this release.

To install the font, open a terminal and type the following:

wget https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fonts-ubuntu/0.862-0ubuntu2/+build/25677616/+files/fonts-ubuntu_0.862-0ubuntu2_all.deb https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fonts-ubuntu/0.862-0ubuntu2/+build/25677616/+files/fonts-ubuntu-console_0.862-0ubuntu2_all.deb
sudo dpkg -i fonts-ubuntu-console_0.862-0ubuntu2_all.deb fonts-ubuntu_0.862-0ubuntu2_all.deb

Once the above is written, the operating system must be restarted for the changes to take effect.

Although this is on Canonical's roadmap, has yet to be confirmed the change. At the moment it is "stopped" and in the "drawer" of the proposals, but unless they detect something serious it is the font that we will see in the main Canonical operating system when we install it from scratch starting next month or upgrade from an existing installation.

Lunar Lobster will arrive on April 20 with news such as GNOME 44 and the new installer.
