Caliber 6 arrives with full text search, improvements and more

It was recently announced release of the new version of Caliber 6 and in this new version the most interesting novelty that is presented is the Full Text Search, which basically allows you to search for a paragraph, word or sentence of a book, in addition to some support improvements and more.

Caliber is a free e-book manager and organizer, which allows the conversion of numerous file formats for e-books. Caliber it is programmed in Python and C languages, uses Nokia's Qt library and is cross-platform, being compatible with the three main operating systems: GNU / Linux, Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows.

This application it has a simple and intuitive interface and is quite simple to use. You need books stored on your computer, this application takes care of managing them by creating a "digital library" in the application.

Books can be added to Caliber manually, in addition to this Caliber takes care of automatically reading the metadata of the e-book file for each title and display it within its details panel.

In this way, it is in charge of making an accommodation and ordering these as follows:

  • Title
  • Author
  • Date
  • Editor
  • Classification
  • Size (maximum size of all formats)
  • Series

Main novelties of Caliber 6

This new version of Caliber 6 that is presented, most of its changes, are features that were introduced during the development of the 5x branch and of the most notable is the “Full Text Search”, in which caliber can optionally index the full text of the books in the library to allow instant word searches within any book.

It is mentioned that to use this functionality, just click on the FT button on the left edge of the search bar. Once indexing is complete, all text in the entire library can be searched. When you add new books to the library, they will be automatically indexed in the background.

Another of the changes that stands out in this new version are the new CPU architectures which has added support for the Apple Silicon CPU architecture on macOS and the ARM CPU architecture on Linux.

In addition, has removed support for 32-bit CPUs because Qt (one of its dependencies) has removed 32-bit CPUs. In particular, on Windows, the caliber installer will now automatically uninstall 32-bit caliber and replace it with 64-bit caliber, plus it's also worth mentioning that support for Windows 8 was dropped in this new release.

On the other hand, the new feature of read aloud in the ebook viewer. In order to access it, simply click the "Read Aloud" button in the viewer controls to start reading the text of the book aloud from the current page. This works through the operating systems' text-to-speech engines.

Regarding incompatibilities What's in this new version:

  • Because caliber has now moved to Qt 6, some third-party plugins will no longer work, until they are also ported to Qt 6.
  • If caliber 5 and caliber 6 are used in the same library, books added with caliber 5 will not be automatically indexed for full-text search, so the index will need to be rebuilt periodically.
