BOSS Linux 5
We recently received the news that India will stop using Windows in its country, at least with regard to the country's Administration. This measure is not new since other countries have already expressed the same intentions, such as China. However, India has not set a specific date but a specific area: all computers.
The operating system chosen for this function is called BOSS (Bharat Operating System Solutions) and in a few months it will be present in every computer of the Administration of India. This operating system is based on Debian and has Gnome as a desktop default.
Currently they are in version 6 of BOSS and each version has an image for server, another for desktop, another for education, an image for installation via network and a last disk image that is a Live-CD.
BOSS will be the default operating system of the Administration of India
BOSS is targeting to the world of Administration so for the moment the applications that we will find in the distribution are oriented to this area and with these functions. So we will not find video games or instant messaging apps that connect to the smartphone. Although using Debian as a base, you can install debs packages with the applications you want.
But not all the criticisms of this distribution are positive. Many development managers have commented that the creators of BOSS are somewhat lost and that its distribution does not offer anything in particular. It may be true or simply that they are critical of a distribution that will control the lives of several tens of millions of people. At the moment, I personally blame that BOSS should have a friendlier environment since it tries to collect all those Windows users and Gnome 3.14 is not friendly at all for those who come from Windows, unfortunately.
