Azure Sphere, Microsoft's operating system for IoT that is based on Linux now available

Azure Sphere

Almost two years ago, 22 months to be exact, Microsoft presented his plans to launch a Linux-based operating system. But no, it was not a distribution for computers like Ubuntu, Debian or Fedora, but a system that would be used in the Internet of Things (IoT). Already in February 2020, a few hours ago, the company that Satya Nadella runs has had the pleasure of announce the general and global availability of Azure Sphere.

The goal of Azure Sphere is to create a totally secure environment to develop and use devices from the internet of things, that is, those smart and everyday devices that are connected to the internet, but with which we do not interact as much as we do with a smartphone or a computer. Azure Sphere encompasses hardware, software, and service components, which is likely responsible for the time it took to launch and operating system since its presentation.

What Azure Sphere offers us

  • Certified device chips, built by hardware partners.
  • Microsoft's own custom Linux operating system for those chips, called Azure Sphere OS.
  • The Project Security Service, a service that runs from Microsoft's data centers that collects data on the security status of IoT devices and provides automatic updates for those devices.
  • The Service Security Team at Microsoft, which helps identify and address IoT device security threats

Currently and since yesterday, February 24, the operating system only includes support for the MediaTek MT3620 chip. Other hardware vendors are working to support Azure Sphere, like an NXP that Microsoft partnered with last summer. The company directed by Satya Nadella hopes to sign new contracts and that other manufacturers will join its project in the medium-term future.
