Automotive Grade Linux: the open-source project for cars

Automotive Grade Linux

AGL or Automotive Grade Linux is a collaborative, open source project to create Linux-based systems for automakers and other technology companies that provide these services. Of course the project is sponsored by the Linux Foundation, promoting AGL as an industry standard, allowing rapid development of new features and technologies that we can enjoy when we are on the road and with the new connected cars.

Car brands such as Mercedes-Benz, Mazda, Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Jaguar, Suzuki, Ford, Subaru, Mitsubishi, Land Rover, and other technology companies such as Panasonic, Renesas, Denso, NTT Data, etc., as you see major brands in the automotive and technology sectors. Therefore, AGL has guaranteed success and that is why it has been an important topic to be discussed at the last ELC of 2017, that is, at the conference Embedded Linux Conference with the intervention of Walt Miner from AGL.

In the technology conference dedicated to embedded or embedded products based on Linux, AGL has been talked about as I say, and the success is increasing considering that in April AGL announced new members for the project, such as ARCORE, BayLibre, IoT.bzh, Nexius, SELTECH, Voicebox, etc. In addition, work has been done on the implementation of the UCB 3.0 "Charming Chinook" (Unified Code Base) distro under this AGL project that goes further, and great and new improvements and news are expected for 2018.

A project that has been growing since its appearance, for example, in 2016 about 1795 commits were contributed to the same code, thanks to 35 or 40 people from about 20 or 25 companies involved. And thanks to the work of all of them we have this fantastic system for our cars with robustness and stability for run apps for Media Players, AM / FM, HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning, that is, air conditioning), etc., accessible from the screen integrated in our cars.
