Audacity 3.0.0 comes with a new extension for projects and these other changes

Audacity 3.0.0

A week ago I wrote an article talking about Hydrogen, which is a very interesting drum machine because it is cross-platform and free. In that article I commented that I was playing music again and, although I prefer Apple software, not everyone has a Mac, iPhone or iPad, and even less uses Linux, so you have to go for what is available too on Windows. A very popular software that is used to mix tracks is the protagonist of this article, and it is that this afternoon they have launched Audacity 3.0.0.

Personally, it is surprising that, after the editor v2.4.2, they have released Audacity 3.0.0 with so few changes, but there is one that makes sense of the renumbering: from now on, projects are saved with .aup3 extension, a new format that saves the entire project in the same file. Without a doubt and although it may not seem like it, it is an important change, since before, to share a project we had to share many files, which could confuse the recipient. The new .aup3 projects are a bit like the GarageBand .band.

Highlights of Audacity 3.0.0

As we see in the release note, Audacity 3.0.0 comes with these new features:

  • New extension .aup3. There won't be many separate files anymore. The change is important, and that is why they have waited for a numbering change to make it.
  • SQLite3.
  • Faster editing, but slower saving.
  • Support for "old" .aup files.
  • Improved the "Noise reduction" effect.
  • New "Tag Sounds" analyzer that can tag sounds and silences.
  • Small tweaks throughout the software, which include more than 160 corrected bugs.

Extension .aup3… hmmm…

It has caught my attention that they have added a number to the extension, and wanted to comment. These days playing at being a musician I have been using TuxGuitar, which is nothing more than the "Free and Free Guitar Pro". If we search the net, we will see that there are at least .gp3, .gp4 and .gp5 files, and now those files have changed to using the .gpx extension. Arobas Music, who develops the software, must have thought, why add a number to the extension and change it with each new version? And used an X instead of the number. And now we see another issue in the new Audacity 3.0.0 extension.

It is clear that we will be using the Audacity v3.x for years, but I have one doubt: will there be an .aup4 extension in the future, will they return to the .aup extension or will they add an X as in Guitar Pro?

Audacity 3.0.0 now available

Audacity 3.0.0 It is now available for all supported systems since developer website. From there, Linux users can download the source code. Later it will appear in official repositories of Linux distributions, AUR on Arch Linux-based systems, in Snapcraft y Flatub.

In versions 2.x, the checkbox of the welcome window in Linux in dark theme (such as Breeze dark) has clear and unreadable text. Can you tell if they fixed this bug?
