CloudStack is open source cloud computing software for building, managing, and deploying cloud infrastructure services.

It was unveiled on lRelease of the new version of Apache CloudStack 4.18, which allows you to automate the deployment, configuration and maintenance of a private, hybrid or public cloud infrastructure (IaaS, infrastructure as a service).

For those who are unfamiliar with Apache CloudStack should know that this is a platform that allows to automate the deployment, setup and maintenance of private, hybrid or public cloud infrastructure (IaaS, infrastructure as a service).

The CloudStack platform was transferred to the Apache Foundation by Citrix, which received the project following the acquisition of Cloud.com. The installation packages are prepared for CentOS and Ubuntu.

Cloudstack does not depend on the type of hypervisor and allows to use Xen (XCP-ng, XenServer / Citrix Hypervisor and Xen Cloud Platform), KVM, Oracle VM (VirtualBox) and VMware on the same cloud infrastructure. A web interface and a special API are provided to manage the user base, storage, compute and network resources.

In the simplest case, a CloudStack-based cloud infrastructure consists of a control server and a set of compute nodes, in which the guest operating system runs in virtualization mode.

Apache CloudStack 4.18 Key New Features

This new released version of Apache CloudStack 4.18 is classified as LTS (Long Term Support) and will be maintained for 18 months.

Of the changes that stand out, we can find that the support for "Edge Zones", light zones typically associated with a single host environment (Currently only hosts with a KVM hypervisor are supported.) In the Edge Zone, you can perform all operations with virtual machines, except for operations with shared storage and console access, which require CPVM (Console Proxy VM). Supports direct download of templates and the use of local storage.

It is also worth noting that the support for automatic scaling of virtual machines ("supports_vm_autoscaling" parameter), as well as an API was implemented to access the console and also an API to manage user data.

Another of the changes that stands out is that a framework For Two Factor Authentication, added compatibility with one-time password authentication with limited time (TOTP authenticator) and added support for encrypting storage partitions.

Of the other changes that stand out from the new version:

  • Integrated support for SDN Tungsten Fabric.
  • Added support for Ceph Multi Monitor.
  • Improved means of sharing console access.
  • A new interface with global settings has been proposed.
  • Provided support for configuring MTUs for VR (virtual router) network interfaces. Added vr.public.interface.max.mtu, vr.private.interface.max.mtu, and allow.end.users.to.specify.vr.mtu settings.
  • Adaptive Groups have been implemented to bind a virtual machine to a host environment (Affinity Groups).
  • Provided the ability to define your own DNS servers.
  • Enhanced toolkit to support guest operating systems.
  • Added support for the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 distribution.
  • The Networker Backup plugin is provided for the KVM hypervisor.
  • The ability to set your own rates for traffic quotas has been provided.
  • Added support for a secure VNC console with TLS encryption and certificate-based access for KVM.
