AMD opens its Vulkan AMDVLK drivers for Linux

AMD and Vulkan logos

AMD is keeping its word and has already opened the code for its AMDVLK driver officially, and it does so under the MIT license, therefore it is already an open source driver so that the community can draw on it and AMD itself can draw on these contributions, a very interesting development circle. They had already said it, therefore it was something to be expected, but they have not kept everyone who had an interest in this opening wait long and there have been no delays or too much begging ...

Matthäus G. Chajdas from AMD was the one who announced it on his Twitter account, and it was retweeted by another developer involved in the project and so on until it has reached our ears. Now many are wondering what will happen next in the graphics industry, since the driver Kitchen RADV has also come a long way of development and now that it has this tough opponent we will see what happens in this regard. However, AMDVLK is designed to work separately from Mesa, on AMD's own PAL (Platform Abstraction Library) platform.

So now the AMD PAL library and also the AMDVLK driver are open source under MIT license. And the included support for this controller will be for a large number of Signature Radeon GPUs, such as HD 7000 series, HD 8000M, R5, R7 and R9 200/300 Series, RX 400/500, M200 / M300 / M400, RX Vega, Pro WX x100, Pro 400/500 and also for FirePro Wx000 / Wx100 / Wx300. A large repertoire of supported graphics cards that can benefit from this news.

However currently AMD only offers support for Ubuntu 16.04.3 and for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.4, but they are expected to work so that soon it will have good support for any of the GNU / LInux distributions. It is also expected that many other controllers will come towards 'the open side of the force' as one would say in the Star Wars universe, but companies are sometimes suspicious and at other times it is debated and they need to go through an endless number of legal hoops before to expose the source code to everyone ...
