Alpenglow Dark will be available on Linux starting with Firefox 88

Alpenglow theme in Firefox 88

They have taken a long time, but, as they say, it is never too late if the happiness is good. And well, for many it will not be a great happiness, but for others it will be a breath of fresh air, or they will simply be happy to know that, finally, the dark version of Alpenglow will work on Linux. For those who are a little lost, it is a theme that Mozilla added by default as an option in Firefox 81, no less than six months ago, and it couldn't be used on Linux.

It seems like, there was a bug that it prevented the theme from detecting that our operating system was using a dark theme, which was how it was activated; if we use a light theme, Firefox's colorful "skin" would use a light theme, but if we use a dark theme, it would become dark. Specifically, Alpenglow uses a purple / bluish background, while in the header we can also see pinkish colors, but they are more discreet in the dark version.

Alpenglow, the colorful Firefox skin soon to 100% on Linux

Alpenglow works as the default theme in this regard, with the difference that the colors are not so dark. It reminds a bit of the normal dark of Twitter or StartPage, with the difference that the Firefox theme has a bit more color. I read in the Mozilla forums that there were users who wanted to use this option, and did not even understand why they did not add the possibility of being able to make the manual change, but the intention is that it changes together with the equipment configuration, something that charges more sense if we have activated the option that makes the general theme change depending on the time of day.

On the other hand, I also remember reading users who said that they did not care, that they preferred the original dark theme. I was between the two opinions: on the one hand, I wanted to use Alpenglow Dark, and in fact I have been using it on Windows and macOS from Firefox 81, but I don't know if I'll end up getting tired and reverting to the normal dark theme. It is also true that some of those comments sounded like the story of the fox and the grapes: "They are not ripe," said the fox, but as an excuse to feel better knowing that he could not reach them.

And when can we enjoy Alpenglow Dark on Linux? Well, there has been no official statement, but is already working in Firefox 88, Currently in the Nightly channel. Being just one theme and it has been available on Windows and macOS for six months now, I see no reason why Mozilla should delay something like this, so I would say that we can use it from April 20, when the 88th Fox browser version to be officially released.
