With the arrival of the Ubuntu 23.04 beta, the return of Edubuntu as an official flavor is confirmed

Ubuntu 23.04 welcomes Edubuntu

There are four weeks left until the launch of Ubuntu 23.04 and all its official flavors, but before that an ISO image usually arrives in beta form. That moment has already happened, and this beta is not like all the others. Yes, it is similar to that of 22.10, since Ubuntu Unity became an official flavor, but this April two will be added to this list: the first is the Ubuntu Cinnamon which had been a remix for four years, and the second is an old acquaintance.

Years ago there was an edition of Ubuntu focused on education. Rudra Saraswat was working on UbuntuEd, at the same time as Ubuntu Unity, Ubuntu Web, Gamebuntu, and a few other projects, partly to fill the gap left by the previous education edition. But it was the leader of Ubuntu Studio who, encouraged by his wife, has resurrected Edubuntu. He is the one he knows, who understands more about development and maintenance, but the project leader will be his wife, who had the idea because she is related to the world of teaching.

Ubuntu 23.04 is coming April 20

Ubuntu 23.04 will arrive on April 20, and the list of official flavors will look like this:

  • Ubuntu (GNOME).
  • Kubuntu (KDE/Plasma).
  • Lubuntu (LXQt).
  • Xubuntu (XFCE).
  • Ubuntu MATE (MATE).
  • Ubuntu Budgie (Budgie).
  • Ubuntu Kylin (Ukui)
  • Ubuntu Studio (KDE/Plasma).
  • Ubuntu Unity (Unity).
  • Ubuntu Cinnamon (Cinnamon).
  • Edubuntu (GNOME with metapackages for education).

11 are now the official flavors. As for what they will share, the core, Linux 6.2. Among what is not, most will have to do with the chosen desktops, and Edubuntu has decided to use GNOME. The Ubuntu Studio lead said they would do it a bit like this issue, basically take an existing distribution and add the special packages on that basis.

As for the images, the main version is available at this link. In cdimage.ubuntu.com both stable and beta versions of Lunar Lobster are available for download.
