Recientemente there was a release of the video editor Shotcut, which arrives in its new version 18.11 developed by MLT designer and uses this framework for organizing video editing.

Shotcut implements support for video and audio formats via FFmpeg. You can use plugins with the implementation of video and audio effects that are compatible with Frei0r and LADSPA.

Of the characteristics of Shotcut that stand out is the possibility of multitrack editing with the composition of the video of the fragments in various source formats, without the need to previously import or transcode them.

About the new version of Shotcut 18.11

In this new release of the application added a screen with options to create a new project and a list of recently opened projects.

For those of us who are Linux users and this application, the developers have implemented the ability to use VA-API for hardware accelerated video encoding.

Also to the application an extended mode has been added to the export section, an option to enable hardware accelerated video encoding and preselection for Ut Video.

While for those who are using this application on MacOS, support for the VideoToolbox API and an SDK was added and the delivery of an assembly signed with a digital signature was implemented.

Another of the main highlights of this new version is the support for superimposing 10-pixel and 20-pixel grids during playback and a smudge removal filter to remove smudges.

On the other hand, regarding the application menus, a new menu «View> Scopes> Video waveform» was added.

Regarding the application filters we can find that the filter of rotation and scaling, the maximum scale is increased to 500% and added a filter showing a timer in the form "MM: SS.SS" and an audio wave display filter.

In the Color Classification dialog, the ability to change the color of the mouse wheel is added.

Finally, the new thing that can be highlighted is the addition of support to display video in a square area with 1080p quality (30 and 60 FPS).

How to install Shotcut 18.11 on Linux?

In order to install this video editor in any of the different Linux distributions, it is necessary to follow the following instructions.

In the case of those who are users of Ubuntu and its derivatives, they can install this application by adding the application repository to their system. For this we must open a terminal with Ctrl + Alt + T and in it we are going to execute the following.

First we are going to add the repository with:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:haraldhv/shotcut

Then we update the list of packages and repositories with this command:

sudo apt-get update

Finally we proceed to install the application with:

sudo apt-get install shotcut

And voila with it, it will have been installed in the system.

For the rest of the Linux distributions we have 3 general methods to obtain this application.

The first one is by using Flatpak, so they must have the support for this type of application on your system.

Then they must open a terminal and type the following command in it:

flatpak install flathub org.shotcut.Shotcut

And ready with it they already installed this application.

Another method that we have to obtain this editor is by downloading the application in its AppImage format, which gives us the facility to use this application without installing or adding things to the system.

To do this, just open one and in it execute the following command:

wget https://github.com/mltframework/shotcut/releases/download/v18.11.18/Shotcut-181118.glibc2.14-x86_64.AppImage -O shotcut.appimage

Done this now we must give execution permissions to the downloaded file with:

sudo chmod +x shotcut.appimage

And finally we can run the application with the following command:

./shotcut.appimage

The last method is with the help of the Snap packages and to install the application we must execute the following command:

sudo snap install shotcut --classic
