The latest LineageOS builds for Raspberry Pi now support hardware acceleration

LineageOS on the Raspberry Pi 4

A few weeks ago i wrote an article about what was the best thing to use on a Raspberry Pi 4. In short, the best thing is not to get stubborn looking for an operating system to conquer them all; The smartest thing to do is to have several flash drives or SD cards to choose the best for each case. For example, LibreELEC if we want a perfectly functional Kodi or RetroPie if we want to play. In the list of options there is space for LineageOS, whose latest updates are improving just where it was most needed.

LineageOS does not create official images for the Raspberry Pi, but a developer whose nickname is KonstaKANG does. His job is to take the official LineageOS and create builds or versions for boards like the Raspberry Pi, among other devices. Ever since I discovered your project, one problem appeared on the list of problems that could cause some concern: the hardware acceleration. The previous one was supposed to already support it, but in the most recent one it has reappeared in the problems section.

LineageOS 19 is based on Android 12L

KonstaKANG has returned the theme of the hardware decoding to the "issues" section, but not because the support has disappeared. What is happening is that it has discovered that its performance varies depending on the chosen decoder and the video resolution. Thus, what at first appeared to be a near-perfect image is actually still a work in progress or "under construction," but much less of it now.

To mention the rest of the problems, KonstaKANG it also says that there are some third-party camera apps that don't work with the official Raspberry Pi camera modules, and that SELinux is in permissive mode. He also mentions "and more", but since he doesn't give details, we can't know exactly what he means, unless we speculate that there are small bugs that we may experience at any time. But taking into account that this is an image for a board, and that everyone should know what to install, I have never given importance to either of these two problems.

Even so, and even if LineageOS for Raspberry Pi works perfectly, I still think it's worth separating things into different units. It is also true that if everything looks good in a 1920×1080 resolution, this may be one of the best options if what we want is a kind of TV Box. In any case, it is one more option that improves with the passage of time.
