The beta version of Android 13 has already been released

Google unveiled recently through a blog post the release of the first beta version of Android 13, which includes some new changes and additions since the preview 1 and preview 2 versions (which we already covered here on the blog).

Of the changes that are known so far about what will be the next version of Android, for example, changes in design, the possibility of choosing the language for each application, a new mechanism for connecting to nearby devices, as well as an interface Android user 12L.

It's April now, and we've made steady progress refining the features and stability of Android 13, around our core themes of privacy and security, developer productivity, and support for tablets and large screens. Today we move into the next phase of our cycle and release the first beta version of Android 13.

For developers, there's a lot to explore in Android 13, from privacy features like the new notification permission and photo picker, to APIs that help you create great experiences, like themed app icons, quick tile placement of configuration and language support per application. as well as capabilities like Bluetooth LE audio and MIDI 2.0 over USB. In Beta 1, we added new permissions for more granular access to media files, improved audio routing APIs, and more.

Note that Until now of the preview versions presented, these have focused on improving the experience on devices with large screens, such as tablets, Chromebooks, and smartphones with foldable screens

Since for example for large screens, the layout of the notification dropdown, home screen, and system lock screen has been optimized to use all available screen space, plus support for a two-pane mode in the configurator, in which configuration sections are now constantly visible on large screens, has also been added.

In addition to being improved compatibility modes for apps, since the implementation of the task bar is proposed, which displays the icons of running applications at the bottom of the screen, allowing quick switching between programs and supporting the transfer of applications through the drag and drop interface. drop to various areas of multi-window mode (split screen), dividing the screen into parts to work with several applications simultaneously.

For the part of the changes in Android 13-beta1 from Preview 2 we can find that selective granting of permissions for access to media files is provided. Previously, if you needed to read media files from local storage, you had to grant the READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE right, which opens access to all files, now you can grant separate access to images (READ_MEDIA_IMAGES), sound files (READ_MEDIA_AUDIO), or video ( READ_MEDIA_VIDEO).

For key generation applications, the Keystore and KeyMint APIs now provide more detailed and accurate error flags and allow the use of java.security.ProviderException exceptions to catch errors

Another of the changes that stand out in this Beta version of Android 13, is in AudioManager has added an API for audio routing, which allows you to determine how the audio stream will be processed. Added the getAudioDevicesForAttributes() method to get a list of devices through which sound output is possible, as well as the getDirectProfilesForAttributes() method to determine the possibility of direct playback of audio streams.

Finally it is worth mentioning that Android 13 is expected to be released in the third quarter of 2022 and for those interested in evaluating the new features of the platform, a preliminary test program has been proposed.

Firmware builds are fixed for Pixel 6/6 Pro, Pixel 5/5a 5G, Pixel 4/4 XL/4a/4a (5G) devices. An OTA update has been provided for those who installed the first trial version.
