Sonic Robo Blast 2: when you put Sonic and Doom Legacy in a mixer

Sonic Robo Blast 2

Although things get better over time, Linux is not the best platform for video games. Like macOS, it is not mainly because most developers focus their efforts on creating for Windows or for consoles, but the community also has something to say about it and titles such as Sonic Robo Blast 2, with some protagonists with such a precise image that they can make us believe that they have the very SEGA behind them.

As we read in the official project page, Sonic Robo Blast 2 is a fan-created open source 3D game (fangame) about the hedgehog Sonic. It has been created using a modified version of Doom Legacy, the Doom port. Its developers have been inspired by the original Sonic games for Sega Genesis and have recreated them with a 3D design. The game is not finished yet, but it already has many functions, levels, enemies and everything that is needed to entertain and have fun.

The Linux version available as flatpak package, so to install it we need to have support enabled in our distribution. Once installed and run for the first time, we will enter the tutorial to learn how to move since, as in Doom or other FPS, we can move the character in all directions at the same time as the camera. The default keys are:

  • Forward: W.
  • Back: S.
  • Left.
  • Right: D.
  • Camera: navigation keys.
  • Jump: space bar.
  • Roll: Left Shift.

Personally, I recommend customizing the controls if we are not comfortable with the previous ones. Or, better yet, if we have any driver available, use it;

If you're looking for a game to hang out with on Linux, and you don't plan on installing Steam, Sonic Robo Blast 2 may be what you were looking for. Mind you, I hope you're better than me.
