Signal CEO Resigned and WhatsApp Co-Founder Appointed Acting CEO

Recently Moxie Marlinspike announced his resignation, after leading the company for almost ten years, Moxie Marlinspike believes that now is the right time to find a replacement.

Signal's Acting Chief Executive Officer will be Brian Acton, a member of the Signal Foundation board of directors, and the leadership transition will take place over the next month. Marlinspike will also remain on the board, as the company seeks a new CEO,

“I now feel very comfortable replacing myself as CEO based on the team that we have, and I also believe this is an important step in building Signal's success,” Marlinspike said in a blog post.

signal, founded in 2014, has grown to be one of the most trusted and prominent encrypted messaging applications. The service has more than 40 million monthly users and is regularly recommended in security guides.

Besides that is established as a non-profit organizationThe company is not funded by advertising or app sales, but relies on donations and a recently launched support program.

"It is a new year and I have decided that it is a good time to replace me as CEO of Signal," said Marlinspike, whose real name is Matthew Rosenfeld. Since its launch, Signal has grown in popularity for its encrypted messaging service. "People are finding more and more value and peace of mind in Signal - a technology built for them, not their data - and they are increasingly willing to support it," Marlinspike wrote.

Marlinspike has said it will remain on the Signal board and will be looking for a new CEO, but WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton will be in the meantime.

The app saw a flood of new users in early 2021 in response to competitor WhatsApp's new privacy policy; But this success was not without controversy.

Signal workers have raised concerns that the company's refusal to uphold content policies could lead to possible misuse of the service. Signal's recent efforts to integrate cryptocurrency payments through MobileCoin have only increased these concerns.

I've been working on Signal for almost a decade. My goal has always been for Signal to grow and sustain beyond my involvement, but four years ago that still wouldn't have been possible. I was writing all the Android code, I was writing all the server code, I was the only person on call for the service, I was facilitating all product development, and I was managing everyone.

I could never leave cell service, I had to carry my laptop with me everywhere in case of emergencies, and occasionally I would find myself sitting alone on the sidewalk in the rain late at night trying to diagnose a service degradation.

marlinspike He is not the only founder who in recent months moved away from his creation after the pleasure of doing things was gradually supplanted by difficult and tedious questions of business and politics.

Jack Dorsey on Twitter, Jeff Bezos on Amazon, Mark Zuckerberg making Facebook a 'metaverse company', a new generation of Web3 founders reinventing blockchain technology: the desire to break it all and start from scratch is ubiquitous in Silicon Valley and, after two years locked up, it's hard to blame those who want to try.

However, just because the founders are fed up doesn't mean that all thorny issues can be brushed aside.

Finally, thank you to everyone who has helped make Signal what it is, supported what we are building, and been there along the way. We already have a lot of exciting work to come at this point, and I am optimistic about the full potential of Signal over the next decade.

In the case of Signal, the primary needs are twofold: on the one hand, increase the number of people who perform donations to support development of the application and endow the project with autonomy; on the other hand, to avoid any regulatory problems derived from the controversial decision of the company to combine encrypted conversations with untraceable payments.

I used this app very often, but this is very serious!

An important part of an application that promises "privacy" is the history of its visible faces. If it's already sold once, it will do so again, either publicly or under the table.

    Anyway, bye Signal, welcome Session.

And to all who use Signal, run away from there… I highly recommend getsession.org

Many will call me "alarmist", but come on, Signal is for a very specific audience that requires the maximum possible privacy and security. This news is a big mistake!!!!
