Open 3D Foundation: Linux Foundation Accelerates 3D Video Game Development and Simulation

Open 3D

The Linux Foundation announced the intention to form the Open 3D Foundation, a new umbrella under which it is intended to accelerate collaboration and development for 3D video games and open source simulation technology. All this with creation and animation tools, and a 3D graphics engine, with which you can create virtual experiences, AAA video games, simulations, etc.

The Open 3D Foundation project will start with a new graphics engine called Open 3D Engine (O3DE). Of course, it will be open source, under the Apache 2.0 license, and not starting from scratch, since it is the code provided by Amazon for its well-known Lumberyard game engine. AWS (Amazon Web Services) is not the only one contributing, Open 3D Foundation also has 20 other founding partners, including Adobe, Huawei, Niantic and Red Hat.

The objective is that speed up this 3D sector, and that developers and creators can create new XNUMXD experiences without the commercial terms of other available tools being a problem. It could certainly be a beginning of something really great, a before and after in how this content is created. And we hope it gives Linux gaming a boost too.

Although there is still no Linux client, It is something that is already planned in the roadmap of the developers, so it is expected to arrive soon. At the moment, there is only a 10-bit version for Microsoft Windows 64.

By the way, for those who did not yet know what it is Amazon Lumberyards, is a free multiplatform AAA video game engine that integrates with AWS and Twitch. It is based on Crytek's CryEngine, which was used in titles such as Far Cry, Crysis, etc.
