The emblem of proprietary software, restrictive software, has always been Microsoft. Your business and your Windows have always been on many home computers and it has been the standard for many inexperienced users. But that does not mean that it is the only thing. Gnu / Linux and Free Software is growing little by little, even among the ranks of Bill Gates's great Microsoft.
Next we are going to talk about the most important Microsoft programs that have become Free Software by decision of Microsoft and its users.
Skype for Linux
The first of these programs is Skype, an instant messaging program that was born for all platforms and that Microsoft, after the purchase of the Skype company, decided to keep the program for Gnu / Linux. The program is not as up-to-date for Linux as it is for Windows, but fortunately it keeps updating.
. Net
Microsoft's famous technology, .Net technology, has long been is now available for use on Gnu / Linux. This technology is important because the latest Microsoft programs, such as Microsoft Office, are based on it. We don't have those programs for our Linux distribution yet, but we can now download and use .Net technology.
Visual Studio Code
More than a year ago we received a surprise from the guys at Microsoft, this surprise it's called Visual Studio Code, an editor for programming that was compatible with most platforms and with a Free Software license. In just a few weeks, Visual Studio Code has become the favorite code editor of many developers, not only from those who loved Microsoft and its products but also from the Gnu / Linux developers. Visual Studio Code is not the famous Microsoft IDE, just a simple but powerful code editor.
SQL Server
We have recently seen how versions of Microsoft's database technology, Sql Server, were released. This technology will allow the arrival of expected programs such as Office or certain web applications that need its technology. Sql server is a great database manager, but there are other equally good alternatives like MariaDB.
Any more free programs?
Many users expect that Microsoft release Office for Linux, a program that is left to be desired and that at the moment is not available for Gnu / Linux. Many users expect to receive something like Android users, but at the moment nothing has been confirmed.
Another long-awaited program and of course it would be a great change of direction in the Microsoft company, is the launch of its own distribution similar to Windows. On this subject there has been a lot of rumor as some managers have asked for them, but it seems that old Bill Gates does not share this opinion. In any case, it seems that little by little Microsoft is embarking on the world of Free Software
Obviously you do not know what free software is ... that they release versions of their programs that run on Linux does not mean that they are riding the free software bandwagon ... the issue for this is the availability of the source code ... which M $ does not contribute anything.
Hello
Won't it be open what you mean instead of free?
A greeting.
Hello:
For example Skype is not free software in the videos Richard Staliman explains.
Greetings.
Skype is not free, and the others are not necessary in Linux, using SQL would be a setback
With your comment it seems that you are saying that these programs are free, are they free skype, ms sql server, etc.? Of course not.
They are just attempts to get more market from ms.
Windows for many inexperienced users ?, hahaha, sorry but there are true computer professionals who use Windows, I only use Linux, but LIKE EVERYONE, I had used Windows before, so before I was inexperienced and now I am an expert for using Linux? , what a stupid article and how little expert you look, mature a little walk ...
Nothing that comes from Microsoft is going to be "free." But I am not inclined (although many do) to use only free software, or in many cases, we would lack basic tools to have a good time in front of the PC and that "good time" would be a headache. That's why I love debian and derivatives ...
As for Micro $ oft, Unlock office? Really? And why do we have a free office or open office?
Regarding this site, it seems that those who write are masters and lords of knowledge. I have met top-of-the-line programmers who work with linux and most of the "expert" users have, had or will have a dual boot or a disk with windows and another with linux.
You are not an "expert" because of the system you use ... or BSD users would be the masters of the universe
