Stremio: interesting alternative to Kodi if what interests you is streaming

Stremio

As many of you already know, Kodi is a great multimedia player that helps us, in addition to playing all kinds of content, to enjoy streaming movies and music, among others. It's been around for a long time an alternative that they baptized as StremioAlthough its name, which is supposed to have been based on the word "streaming", gives us an idea of what it is for. Is it a real alternative or are we overdoing it if we affirm this?

It is a real alternative… if we only think about streaming and settle for the sources that are available. In fact, if we go to the app and its sources, it has a friendlier design than that of Kodi, more intuitive, so it is a good option for all those who have decided to forget about the one that was born as XBMC because they think it is very complicated. Next we are going to show you how to install Stremio on linux and tell you a little about how it works.

How to install Stremio on Linux

There are different ways or options to install Stremio. The best we can do is go to this link y choose the package for our distribution. There are them for Debian / Ubuntu, Fedora, Arch / Manjaro (also AUR), in source code and in Flatpak version. Taking into account that the last one contains everything in a cleaner package, it would be my recommendation, but first we have to enable support if our distribution does not include it by default.

If we don't have an account, when we start the app it will ask us to create one. This will serve us mainly to synchronize between devices. Once inside, we will find something similar to what we would see in apps like Netflix, Amazon Prime or Movistar +, saving the distances. In fact, Stremio offers us the possibility of watching movies from services such as the aforementioned Netflix, Amazon or even Apple's iTunes. On the other hand, with the addons included by default we can also search and view content from streaming pages, but in torrent, which we all know what it means.

Stremio is more intuitive than Kodi

About how it works, there is little we can say beyond that it's all very intuitive: from the Discover tab we will see what is trending, in addition to being able to access the sections of movies, series, YouTube or search for content by type, year and others; In the My Library tab we will see what we have saved to see later, including the reproductions that we have already started; In a last tab there is a calendar that we can consult to see what we have in front of us, which is mainly useful if we are following a series. On the other hand, there is a text box where we can paste magnet links to play movies without having to download them.

In the icon of the puzzle piece is where we can see what addons we have installed and install more. Although those that serve to reproduce torrents stand out, there are also some to see adult content, IPTV players, audio books and even cooking recipes, but, as you would expect, much of this content is only in English.

Also available for Windows, macOS and Android

Although of course we have focused on the Linux version here, Stremio is also available for other operating systems, like Windows, macOS or, even more interesting because it is compatible with the TV version, for Android. The fact that an account is necessary to use the app can slow us down a bit, but we can use a Facebook account and, once created, all our favorites, everything that we have started to play and all the installed addons will be the same on any device on the one we use Stremio.

So now you know. For me, Kodi It has no rival, but it does have a weak point in its default interface that I think is aggravated if we want to reproduce our music library. Stremio is not that powerful, but it is worth a try and, in addition, its interface does leave a good taste in your mouth right after installation. If you try it, feel free to leave your experiences in the comments.

KODI handles it up to an 8-year-old child, if someone really thinks it is not useless, it has other skins that are even more so.
