Installable alternatives to cloud services

We discuss alternatives to online services

In recent years, there has been an increase the number of services that, executed in the browser, provide benefits similar to traditional applications for the computerr. We have argued in previous articles the advantages and disadvantages of each one, now we will analyze the installable alternatives to cloud services.

Since the end of last year, countless services based on Artificial Intelligence have appeared, features that locally installed applications do not usually offer, at least not without the need to connect to the Internet. However, the cost of these applications is usually quite high and the free features are quite limited.

For example, Synthesia, a video creation and editing platform using Artificial Intelligence, charges $30 per month for 10 minutes of generated videos. Veed.io, a non-AI editor, gives 1440 minutes for $20.

On the other hand, it remains to be seen how many of these services based on Artificial Intelligence will continue with us within a year. Not to mention the issue of privacy and protection of personal data.

Of course, everything will depend on the use. If we do not have very powerful teams, we are not experts in certain disciplines, or we work with other people, cloud applications are undoubtedly an excellent alternative.

Alternatives to Photopea

Photopea is an online photo editor that works with some of the most popular graphic formats including PSD, XCF, AI and jpg. The differences between the free and paid version (5 dollars) is to remove the ads. allow more recorded previous steps and provide more storage spaces.

Since the goal of these articles is to promote new software, I'm not going to be too obvious about suggesting The Gimp.

upscayl

Es a tool based on Artificial Intelligence that runs locally so we will need software with a good graphics card.  The program proposes us to use 4 different open source algorithms to increase the resolution of the image allowing the enlargement without losing quality.

Showphoto

Es a photo editor part of the KDE project and developed by the same managers of Digikam. It is not as complete as The Gimp, but it has the basic tools and effects.

Canva

I love Canva. For those of us born with two left hands and the Mr Magoo design perspective, having plenty of templates to create designs with the addition of some decent (though not spectacular) AI tools at less than $7 a month is a chore. salvation.
However, if you have a flair for design you can save yourself the bucks with these tools:

Scribus

Scribus is an application for the creation of both digital and printed publications since it can handle different color profiles. It also works for creating pdf forms.

Inkscape

This program vector drawing is a classic for graphic and web designers who love open source. It allows working with both predefined and free forms and works with the most common formats.

Figma

It is a collaborative prototyping tool that has become very popular in recent years.

penpot

penpot is an open source alternative that is used by various open source communities to establish the design drafts of their websites and user interfaces.

Actually, I'm cheating, it's an application intended for the cloud but self-hosted, so in theory it can be used locally from the browser.

MindMeister

Mind maps are a very popular tool for developing projects and communicating ideas. MindMeister is one of the most popular online tools for creating them. If you use Google Docs you can add it as an extension.

In case you prefer to use free software there are several alternatives.

Wismapping

Wismapping can be used on your own website or downloaded for use under Docker.  It is based on HTML 5 and SVG.

freeplane

an app local written in Java that we find in the repositories of the main Linux distributions. It has different templates that facilitate the creation of maps plus a selection of images to illustrate them.
