If you thought you knew what a small computer is, we present the Proteus Device

Proteus Device

Many years ago, before real smartphones were born in 2007, there was what was known as the "Pocket PC." Most were using Windows Mobile, or a variant long before the one that has recently failed in the mobile market, but there were other brands and operating systems as well. This is something that I have not been able to stop remembering when reading about the Proteus Device, a device that looks like a mobile phone but is much more ... and less.

The Proteus Device is a handheld computer created by XXLSEC. As we can read in the Project Wiki, it is a device that is already finalized and available to buy, but they never stop developing it, they are always improving it. It is designed primarily as a development tool for engineering purposes. Contrary to what we might think, it lacks antennas that would allow us to connect to mobile networks, which makes it clear that it is not a smartphone.

Proteus Device Specifications

  • 5 ″ IPS touch screen, with 1280 × 720 resolution.
  • I.MX6 processor.
  • 1GB of RAM.
  • 8GB of eMMC storage.
  • 3.500 mAh battery.
  • 10/100 ethernet port.
  • Optional WiFi (SDIO interface).
  • Micro USB port, but only for charging the device.

An important question from the Wiki explains that Proteus Device is:

A development tool for engineering purposes. It has no usable end-user applications, but you can start it on the Linux 5.4 kernel and root filesystem with QT 5.12 and the sample UI application. From there you should be your own teacher.

It is a handheld computer and XXLSEC says that Linux distributions "probably" can be used on this device. It is not something they have tried, but they say that distributions capable of moving in 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage should work well.

Users interested in getting a Proteus Device should contact XXLSEC and ask for a quote and delivery system. It is clear that it is neither a computer nor a mobile phone like the pinephone, so its "target" is reduced. In any case, it is still a curious device that was worth sharing with you.
