Canonical Logo

In an official statement from Canonical, the Ubuntu developer among other projects, has announced the launch of a new minimal operating system called Minimal Ubuntu targeted and optimized especially for public clouds and Docker Hub. The new operating system is nothing great, it is simply designed to deliver what is expected of it, offering exceptional performance, stability and reliability to keep you running at all times.

Minimal Ubuntu is a very small base Ubuntu image, as small as possible, for this type of public cloud operation. Minimal Ubuntu by Canonical it only occupies 50% less than Ubuntu Server, if we compare both images. But despite this, the system boots up to 40% faster than the server version of the GNU / Linux Ubuntu distro. Of course, it shares a lot with its older sister, but it will deliver very good results when used as a virtual machine.

Also, Minimal Ubuntu is still fully compatible with the base of standard packages for Ubuntu, with which we will have a lot of support and a lot of apps available without any problem. The Minimal Ubuntu user will therefore have access to any package that is available in the official Ubuntu repositories. You should also know that Minimal Ubuntu is powered by a special kernel, a kernel optimized for KVM.

Both Minimal Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and Minimal Ubuntu 18.04 LTS are now available with EC2, GCE, LXD and OpenStack. In other words, Minimal Ubuntu is currently available in two versions, one for Amazon EC2 clouds, Google Compute Engine or GCE, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud, and another for Canonical's LXD and KVM-based OpenStack solutions. If you are interested you can get hold of the images, in fact, one of them occupies only 29MB, to give you an idea of the dimensions of this new operating system.
