21,7% of programmers use a Linux operating system, which makes us the third in this field

21,7% of all programmers in the world they use linux to develop their applicationsAt least these are the data collected in the latest surveys conducted with developers.

With 21,7% we are third in the list of most used systems, only below Windows 7 with 22,5% of the share and Mac OS X which surprisingly occupies the first position with 26,2% of the total developer share.

Within this 21,7% user share, we have to 12,3% use the Ubuntu operating system, which is the king of Linux systems in this field. The rest of the percentage is widely distributed among all distributions, with Debian in second place with only 1,9% share and the rest of distributions such as Linux Mint or Fedora with figures around 1%.

As for Microsoft's rivals, we have a significant number of programmers who use Windows 10, approximately 20,8% of users, possibly motivated by the free update (and being a good programmer does not mean being good at systems and vice versa). In the end, 52,2% of programmers are using a Windows system, the lowest figures being Windows XP with 0,4% and the disastrous Windows Vista with 0,1%.

If we look at last year's results, the use of linux by programmers is up 1,2%. As for the others, Windows 7 is the one that has lost the most user share(It was almost 50% in 2013), something motivated perhaps by the free upgrade to Windows 10 that Microsoft offered to users, even if Windows 7 is pirated.

To name more data from the survey, the most used programming language is JavaScript, with 55,4%, followed by SQL with 49,1% and Java with 36%. Regarding the way they program, 67,8% are employed, 12,6% are students, 7,1% work as freelancer and 4,3% are self-employed.

If third place, after windows that in total is very little more than 50% but mac is not the first it is still windows, and if we add that on many occasions companies force you to use what they have because the survey is quite reasonable .

In addition to the fact that if you are paid and forced to use something, there is little reason to change the system, only a desire and impetus ... oo

I do not understand why Mac OS and Linux have their different versions grouped together and in Windows they appear separately. If the Windows versions are grouped, the result is 1st Windows, followed by MAC OS and Linux in third place. I use Linux for a long time, but separating the Windows versions to make it appear worse (or for MAC OS to appear first does not seem very normal to me

Ha ha. I thought the same. I think it was an unnecessary (and stupid) comment, after all systems encompasses much more than just an operating system

Being a programmer and not using Linux is 'genius' ... or as they say, imposed by the company. Even more looking at the most used languages .. «Javascript (Surely in nasty and dirty mode) .. SQL .. JAVA (There is another language that lets us be dirty as much as we can O_o)… come on, development with web technologies (we already know what Java is used for in this survey, right?) ... they develop on windows / mac and run it on a linux server ... (these people are so geniuses xD).

I only know that with my linuxete I can lift containers to work on my projects in isolation and without filtering the host with 1000 packages from different projects ... or have 'pkg-config' at hand ... just to give a few tiny examples.

PS: I totally agree with the comment above .. here who wins is Windows by a landslide.
